Fernando Arrabal

Fernando Arrabal is a poet, novelist, playwright, filmmaker and essayist. Born in 1932 in Spain, he has lived in France since 1955. He has published more than 800 books of poetry, over 100 plays and 14 novels, and has produced 7 feature films. His work has been translated into many languages. He won numerous awards, including the Nabokov, the Nadal and the Grand Prix du Théâtre presented by the Académie française.

 Joséphine Bacon

Joséphine Bacon is an Innu poet, writer and director. She was born in Pessamit, Quebec. She is the author of several bilingual poetry books, written in Innu-Aimun and French, all published by Mémoire d’encrier. She was a finalist to the Governor General’s Literary Award and won the Prix des libraires du Québec in 2019, for her book Uiesh/Quelque part.

GIORGIO BAFFO

Girgio Baffo was an 18th-century Italian poet, born in 1694 in Venice and died in the same city in 1768. Author of satirical and licentious sonnets, along with Carlo Goldoni, he was one of the leading Venetian language writers.

Albert baguette

Albert Baguette (1 Nov 1916--10 October 2004) studied humanities in college, before studying philology at the Catholic University of Louvain. He worked for most of his life as a scientist and professor of linguistics, and did not begin publishing literary works until late in his life. Éphémérides is one of the few works that he published during his lifetime, and condenses the last years of his life into fifteen or so narratives.

JULIUS BALTAZAR

Born in Paris in 1949, Julius Baltazar was noticed in his youth by Salvador Dali who took the budding artist under his wing and encouraged him to pursue his artistic career.

The works of Julius Baltazar, a mix of printmaking and painting, usually feature elements of intaglio printing, ink drawing and Arlequin pencil. A deep interest in literature led the artist to illustrate over three hundred works of poetry. The artist's work is featured in many important public collections in Canada, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Japan and France.

Vincent Bardet

Born in 1947 in Clermont-Ferrand, Vincent Bardet grew up in the Paris region and graduated in philosophy from the Institut d’Études Politiques and the Université de Nanterre. Translator and essayist, occasionally a poet, Bardet worked at Éditions de Seuil from 1980 to 2008. A devout Zen Buddhist, Bardet helped to introduce this spiritual tradition to France through translations and introductory works.

An expert in contemporary art, art historian and collector, Michel Bohbot has contributed to many artist’s books, in addition to authoring several articles and prefaces. Alain Bosquet

  Born in 1919 in Odessa, Ukraine, and died in Paris in 1998, Alain Bosquet was a French writer. After his involvement in the Second World War, alongside Charles de Gaulle and allied forces, Bosquet turned to a literary career, both as a writer, as an academic and as a publisher at Calmann-Lévy. A translator and literary critic, he also devoted himself to novels and poetry. His poems received several awards, including the Prix Chateaubriand, the Prix Max Jacob and the Grand Prix de Poésie presented by the Académie française.

Born in 1926 and died in 2016, Michel Butor was a poet, novelist, essayist, teacher, art critic and French translator. He won the Prix Renaudot for his novel La Modification, published in 1957. For poetry, he won the Prix Mallarmé and the Grand prix de poésie de la Société des gens de lettres. He worked with visual artists on a large number of artist’s books.

Georges-Emmanuel Clancier

 

Born in 1914 in Limoges and died in Paris in 2018, Georges-Emmanuel Clancier was a French writer. He authored many novels, the best known being Le Pain noir and L’Éternité plus un jour. He also published many books of poetry, including Terre de mémoire, Le Paysan céleste and Passagers du temps, for which he received the Goncourt de la poésie. Recipient of various other awards, he won the Prix des libraires and the Grand prix de littérature presented by the Académie française.

Leonard Cohen

 

Born in 1934 in Westmount and died in 2016 in Los Angeles, Leonard Cohen was a Canadian singer, poet and novelist. His career as a singer-songwriter earned him a wide international audience and left a legacy of classics such as Hallelujah, Suzanne and So Long Marianne. In poetry, he is credited with several collections, including Book of Mercy, Stranger Music and Book of Longing; the latter two were translated in Quebec by his friend Michel Garneau.

Hervé de  Fontenay

 

Born in 1948 and died in 2014, Hervé de Fontenay completed his studies at the Université de Montréal and McGill University, before joining McGill University in 1975. In 1977, he pursued his career by joining the Centre for Continuing Education, where he subsequently worked. At the same time, he pursued literary activities as a poet.

Philippe Delaveau

 

Born in 1950, Philippe Delaveau is a writer, translator and art critic, but he is best known as a poet. He is credited with over a dozen collections of poems that have received numerous awards, including the Prix Guillaume-Apollinaire, the Prix Max-Jacob, the Prix Rainer-Maria Rilke and the Grand prix de poésie presented by the Académie française. He has also contributed to many artist’s books, in collaboration with Julius Baltazar.

Jean Désy is a poet. He teaches at the University of Laval in literature and medicine. His passions were Nordic for much of his life. He still practices medicine as a convenience store on the North Shore and in Nunavik. His latest publications include an essay entitled “Being and not being,” about contemporary Inuit life, published by XYZ in March 2019; an essay entitled “Necessary irrationality,” published by XYZ in September 2020; a prose-poem entitled “Non je ne mourrai pas,” published by Mémoire d’encrier in January 2021; and finally an essay entitled “We are poetry,” published in January 2022 by XYZ and made from interviews with 31 poets and artists.

  Michel Déon

 

Born in 1919 and died in 2016, Michel Déon was a French writer and author of numerous novels, including Les Poneys sauvages (Prix Interallié) and Un taxi mauve (Grand prix du roman presented by the Académie française). In addition to his vocation as a writer, Déon pursued a career at Éditions Plon and contributed to various publications and magazines. He became a member of the Académie française in 1978.

 Charles Dobzynski

 

Born in 1929 and died in 2014, Charles Dobzynski was best known as a poet, although he also wrote novels and short stories. He is credited with some 40 poetry collections, which won him the Goncourt de la poésie and the Grand prix de poésie de la Société des gens de lettres. Member of the Académie Mallarmé, he was also jury president of the Prix Guillaume-Apollinaire.

Hélène Dorion

 

Born in Quebec City in 1958, Hélène Dorion is a Quebec poet and novelist. While pursuing a career as a teacher and publisher (at Noroît), she wrote a substantial literary work, mainly in poetry, which won her many awards, including the Prix Mallarmé, the Prix Anne-Hébert and the Canadian Governor General’s Award. She has also worked on many artist’s books and contributed to various journals.

Born in 1938, Madeleine Gagnon is a Quebec writer of poems, novels and essays. A graduate of the Université de Montréal and the Université d’Aix-en-Provence, she taught for many years at UQAM before devoting herself exclusively to writing. A member of the Académie des lettres du Québec, she received numerous awards, including the Governor General’s Award and the Prix Athanase-David.

Katia Grubisic is a Canadian writer, editor and translator, born in 1978 in Toronto. She is trained in literature and holds a master's degree from Concordia University. She is the author of a collection of poetry, What if red ran out, which won the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award. Her poems and works of fiction have appeared in various magazines and anthologies. She was nominated for the Governor General's Award for her translation of the novel Brothers by David Clerson.

Carlo Goldoni

Often considered the founder of modern Italian comedy, Carlo Goldoni was an 18th-century Italian playwright who wrote in Italian, French and Venetian. He worked in Venice and France, where he was exiled in 1762 following financial difficulties and aesthetic disagreements with influential compatriots. Lionel Ray

Lionel Ray (born Robert Lorho) is a French poet, born in 1935 in the Paris region. A lycée teacher, he won the Prix Guillaume-Apollinaire at a very young age and began to publish his poetry regularly in the early 1970s with the encouragement of Louis Aragon. Since then, he has published numerous books, including Le Corps Obscur (Prix Mallarmé), Comme un château défait (Prix Supervielle and Prix Goncourt de la Poésie) and Pages d'ombre : poèmes (Prix Guillevic, Grand prix de poésie de la Société des gens de lettres).

Marcel Schwob

Born in 1867 and died young in 1905, Marcel Schwob was a French writer who befriended Paul Valéry, Oscar Wilde and Colette. His work as a storyteller, bordering on prose poetry, influenced other well-known writers, such as André Gide, William Faulkner and Jorge Luis Borges. He is best known for Livre de Monelle and La Croisade des enfants.

Jude Stéfan

Jude Stéfan, born Jacques Dufour, is a French poet, novelist and essayist, born in Pont-Audemer in 1930. He is credited with about 20 poetry books written from the 1960s to today. He won the Prix Max-Jacob and the Grand prix de poésie de la Ville de Paris.

André Velter

Born in 1945, André Velter is a French poet, essayist and radio host. A frequent traveller, Velter writes poems and essays that depict his trips to Asia, particularly Tibet. Interested in encounters and exchanges, he has worked with many visual artists. His poems have won various awards, including the Prix Mallarmé for L'Arbre-Seul and the Goncourt de la poésie for his entire work.

georges visat

 

Born in 1910 and died in 2001, Georges Visat was a French engraver, publisher and painter. On the eve of the Second World War, he founded his intaglio printing company in Paris, whose activities resumed upon his return from captivity. The engraving reproductions by George Bracques enabled him to invent a new technique, relief engraving, which was taken up by many artists, including his friend Max Ernst. In the 1960s, he became an art publisher and helped disseminate the work of many artists, such as Hans Bellmer, Alberto Giacometti and Roberto Matta. He devoted the last part of his life to painting.

Louise Warren

Born in 1956, Louise Warren is a Quebec poet and essayist. In poetry, she is credited with more than a dozen books, including Le Lièvre de mars, La Lumière, l’Arbre, le Trait and Le Plus Petit Espace. As an essayist, she explored the themes of creation, memory and mourning in La Forme et le Deuil, Archives du lac, and was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award.

joshua watsky

Joshua Watsky is an American teacher, translator, poet and artist’s book publisher. He teaches at Southern Connecticut State University. He has translated poems by Eugène Guillevic, Michel Butor and Philippe Delaveau. He has regularly collaborated with Julius Baltazar and René Laubiès on projects involving work by these authors as well as his own poems. As publisher at Wequetequock Cove Editions, he is also known for the publication of artist’s books dedicated to Arrabal and Marester.

  Kenneth white

  Born in 1936, Kenneth White moved to France after his youth in Scotland. Since 1983, he has held the Chair of 20th-Century Poetics at the Université de Paris-Sorbonne. In 1989, he founded and currently directs the reviews of the International Institute of Geopoetics. He has authored numerous works, including stories, poetry and essays. He has won various awards, including the Prix Édouard-Glissant.
