Stella Pace

from tuesday, January 30 to Saturday, February 24, 2024

Opening Reception Thursday, February 1 at 5:30pm

"Raison d’Être" is an unpublished corpus born out of the necessity to create. These works were conceived during various stays in artist residencies. It is a workshop endeavor where the hand invents rather than the mind.

"The material has its secret life, and it's the artist who brings it to life. One must let oneself be carried away and swept along by it." This quote by Henri Bauchau perfectly summarizes "Raison d’Être," an invitation where lithography, carborundum engraving, and drawing-assemblage become one.

Approach:

I have spoken little about my process, preferring to manifest it rather than talk about it. Whenever a gesture emerges from my hands, it is and has always been instinctive. There is no reflection, and I have neither preconceived ideas nor pre-established plans or constructions. I follow this flow until the work no longer needs me.

Carmen Isasi

"DEVENIR"

September 3 to October 5, 2024

The opening reception will take place on Saturday, September 7, at 2:30 PM.

We are delighted to announce the summer residency of Spanish artist Carmen Isasi at Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir. This residency will culminate in a solo exhibition of her works, titled "DEVENIR."

Carmen Isasi is the recipient of the Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir Prize, awarded at the 13th International Biennial of Contemporary Print (BIECTR) in Trois-Rivières in 2023. Her work was recognized for its poignant depiction of the hardships faced by migrants in their pursuit of a better future, capturing the pain of these perilous journeys with elegance.

DEVENIR is the title of the series of photogravures made in recent years that show her interest in two themes that currently challenge us: the drama of migration and the repercussions of climate change on nature.

The first serie, UNINHABITED, is a project that arose from the need to denounce the abandonment to which migrants are subjected when, due to the critical situation they suffer in their respective countries, they choose to cross the Mediterranean or the Atlantic in precarious boats bound for European coasts. Unfortunately, many of these people do not manage to reach them.

In the works, absence becomes a presence: what is not seen is what is evoked: drifting clothes, at the mercy of currents and tides, question us about the bodies they covered, their identity, their origin, their history.

This series of photogravures belongs to the project of the same name, which includes photography, artist's book, video, video installation and sound installation.

WOUNDS (I y II) belong to the project of the same name, which was born out of the devastation caused by a snowstorm in the city of Madrid, mainly on its trees, in January 2021.

VESTIGES is the latest series Carmen Isasi has been working on. The works present fragments of reified landscapes enclosed in crumpled paper, like portable memories that could be opened and expanded at any time and place.

Please note: During the "DEVENIR" exhibition, Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir will participate in Montreal Galleries Weekend 2024, from September 26 to 29, as well as in the Journées de la culture, offering presentations and demonstrations focused on printmaking, with a special emphasis on photopolymer.

We invite you to explore this moving exhibition and participate in the activities at Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir during these events.

Ed Pien

Exposition du 15 Octobre à 23 Novembre

In this presentation, my works celebrate the sentience of water. Water, a life-sustaining substance, becomes my indispensable collaborator. The works presented here bear witness to its expressive and dynamic presence, as well as its creativity and sense of non-human agency.

Collaborating with water allowed me to personally push beyond my own printmaking boundaries. For instance, in the Big Thirst series, water kidnapped from the Caribbean Sea, containing salt, minerals, and organic matter, has been coaxed to interact with metal plates pressed onto printing paper soaked in this rather volatile medium. Over the course of a few days, the remnants of the accelerated oxidation on the plates are transferred onto the paper. In turn, I respond to the nuanced markings and rich coloration registered on the paper, by adding my own set of images using intaglio processes.

In another work, equally playful in its making, involve capturing and printing bubbles formed through a combination of water, ink, and soap. Additionally, one piece explores the traces left by water subjected to gravitational force.

The water involved comes from diverse locations, including Chile, Cuba, Iceland, Canada, and Brazil. This spirited substance, brimming with its own complex and storied life, profoundly influences the ways in which I conceptualize and engage in these collaborative printing endeavors.

When water is perceived solely as a resource, a mere material for daily use, or as something to be readily exploited, its agency and spirit have been denied. In exploring the sentience of water, I am compelled to rethink my actions in this world, acknowledging my complicity in the negative impacts exacted on our shared planet, which we cohabit with all other more-than-human beings.

Exposition December 3, 2024

Industrial design and visual arts allow me to counterbalance chaos by creating a harmonious and calm environment. The straight line, as used in design and advocated by Kandinsky in arts, becomes my antidote against confusion.

I treat landscape in a distinctive way and I adapt the technique of traditional printmaking. I plunge into a specific environment in order to feel its flow of sensations. This experience finds its tangible form on linocuts with regular abstract motives repeated on different materials.

I invite the spectator to experience the tranquility of the landscape by observing at the topography of my work. To each, may discover a secret and imagine a meaning.
