We are delighted to announce the summer residency of Spanish artist Carmen Isasi at Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir. This residency will culminate in a solo exhibition of her works, titled "DEVENIR."
Carmen Isasi is the recipient of the Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir Prize, awarded at the 13th International Biennial of Contemporary Print (BIECTR) in Trois-Rivières in 2023. Her work was recognized for its poignant depiction of the hardships faced by migrants in their pursuit of a better future, capturing the pain of these perilous journeys with elegance.
DEVENIR is the title of the series of photogravures made in recent years that show her interest in two themes that currently challenge us: the drama of migration and the repercussions of climate change on nature.
The first serie, UNINHABITED, is a project that arose from the need to denounce the abandonment to which migrants are subjected when, due to the critical situation they suffer in their respective countries, they choose to cross the Mediterranean or the Atlantic in precarious boats bound for European coasts. Unfortunately, many of these people do not manage to reach them.
In the works, absence becomes a presence: what is not seen is what is evoked: drifting clothes, at the mercy of currents and tides, question us about the bodies they covered, their identity, their origin, their history.
This series of photogravures belongs to the project of the same name, which includes photography, artist's book, video, video installation and sound installation.
WOUNDS (I y II) belong to the project of the same name, which was born out of the devastation caused by a snowstorm in the city of Madrid, mainly on its trees, in January 2021.
VESTIGES is the latest series Carmen Isasi has been working on. The works present fragments of reified landscapes enclosed in crumpled paper, like portable memories that could be opened and expanded at any time and place.
Please note: During the "DEVENIR" exhibition, Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir will participate in Montreal Galleries Weekend 2024, from September 26 to 29, as well as in the Journées de la culture, offering presentations and demonstrations focused on printmaking, with a special emphasis on photopolymer.
We invite you to explore this moving exhibition and participate in the activities at Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir during these events.
